Sir Chris Hoy and the rest of the Team GB track sprint take to the velodrome on Thursday in their quest to bring home gold. The competition is very fierce though, with both Germany and France having quality teams that are sure to make it an all out battle for the gold.
Speaking after a test run on the newly built velodrome in the Olympic Park, Hoy stated that Great Britain have a much faster team than that of Beijing 2008 and that the team sprint was a race that anyone could win.
Team GB have been installed as 3rd favourites for the event at 5/1 with Betfred, with France a 6/4 shot and Germany very marginal favourites at 13/10. While the men’s team sprint looks a very tough race to call, it does seem to be a three way shoot out between the above nations, as Australia are next in the betting at 8/1.Chris Hoy will be somewhat disappointed in not being selected to defend his Beijing 2008 individual sprint title in favour of Jason Kenny, but is convinced that the gold medal is up for grabs in this event. The Germans hold the world record which was set in December 2011, but the rumour after test rides are that the London velodrome is riding extremely quickly. We may well see a new world record set tomorrow evening. From a betting point of view, the winner is very likely to be one of Germany, France, or GB. Wouldn’t it be fantastic if the sprint team could follow up with a gold just one day after Bradley Wiggins absolutely cruised to success in the men’s time trial!
